I HATE CAB DRIVING

by Vegas Taxi Driver
October 2, 2006

The truth is, I despise the job. However, it works for me at this point and time. I am not critical of those who enjoy the cab driving, and I have utmost respect for the drivers who have been driving taxis in Las Vegas for 20 years and more. It is just not my preference. My goal is to continue learning as much as I can about web design and e-commerce and digital photography, so that I can earn enough doing things I enjoy, and not have to drive a cab any more.

Most people who take taxis in Las Vegas are curious about what it would be like to be a Las Vegas cab driver. They often have their own ideas about it being an exciting and dangerous job, based on what they have seen on television. In honesty, cab drivers in most other cities have a lot more excitement and danger than Las Vegas cab drivers, with the exception of bad traffic. Taxi drivers in Las Vegas spend most of their time hauling tourists and conventioneers from one major resort to another, or to and from the airport. Those places have lots of security, and people who can afford to fly and stay in nice resorts are not usually not that dangerous and exciting.

I hate the beginning of each one of my shifts, and I am always glad when it is over. I try to be cordial to my customers. People who get in my cab assume that I must enjoy it, or I wouldn't be doing it. The truth is, I hate being employed. This is the closest thing to being independent and employed that is available to me at this time. So, no matter how much I hate it, at least I do not have someone looking over my shoulder every minute of my working hours.

    Hello,
I was looking at your website and think you are doing a great job. I think I now have enough information to get started.
There are a couple of questions that I am having trouble finding the answer to.
I am a returning veteran just coming back from overseas. I have a residence in North Las Vegas but recently lost my Nevada ID and drivers license. I understand that I am required to show proof of residency to get a taxi drivers permit. What exactly is proof of residency.
I also have to take a driving test again because I let my drivers license expire. When I went to the DMV last September they told me I can't use a rental car to do my driving test. Any ideas how to do a driving test if I don't yet own a car?
Thanks for your help in advance.
    Eric

SOME PEOPLE SHOULD JUST NOT BE TAXI DRIVERS

We who drive taxis are in the people business. In order to have the best income we have to be able to relate to the people we service. Service is the key word and if we are giving good service we should make a better living.
I make it a habit to find out where my fares come from and a bit about them if they do not put out a don't talk to me vibe. If they ask me how I am, I am finer than frog fur, or if I was any better I would have to be twins. It is our job to make them feel comfortable and appreciated as a customer.
This brings me to my point there are many in our ranks that just do not make the rest of us look good. After riding with one of these non people persons the customer has a chip on their shoulder for the rest of us.
While waiting for a fare at the Grand Chateau the other day I witnessed one of these specimens. This driver had just hauled a couple from the airport to the hotel and unloaded a couple of bags and was paid by the customer. The driver looked at what he was paid and looked at the customer and said "what no tip?" The customer said that the tip was in there, and the driver said "what niney cents?" The customers at this time were a bit cowed and were making for the door with great dispatch with the driver yelling after them that they sould do something anatomically impossible to themselves and they should walk if they did not want to tip.

This display floored me and I thought for a moment and wrote the drivers cab number and company down and the number to the TA and went inside to give it to the customer, but alas they had already cleared the lobby. We need to rid ourselves of these people that make the rest of us look bad. Lets work to clean up our own to better sereve the public and at the same time make a better living for ourselves.

    Dear Taxicab Authority:

Just a love note from a taxi driver who thought that he would make some good or at least average money when there were several large conventions in town at the same time (2/1-2/4 so far). The last few days have been a bust because of the great number of convention cabs on the road. The last time we had almost this many people in town and there was no convention cabs it seemed to me and people I know that we handled the load just fine, and the riding public was not inconvienced.

If it is the idea of the Taxicab Authority to get lots of turnover of taxi drivers so that they can keep selling licenses and ticketing new drivers who have not learned the rules yet. Along with the companies who want new drivers so that they do not have to pay benefits to the more experienced drivers. I think that it is working like a charm. This keeps up and I will be one of those who has to find another line of work to make the bills, as I have this horrible eating habit and want a roof over my head.

So thanks again Taxicab Authority for completely ignoring those who know the most about what works in the business in this town. Also thanks for not enforcing the laws you make to protect the riding public by looking the other way when the long haulers consistantly cause the honest drivers a problem making them think we all are crooks.

Yes, Tom, I understand and feel your pain. I quit a year ago at this time for that very reason. Unless I am mistaken, there are still as many regular medallions and weekend medallions on the road right now as there were during the best times and highest visitor counts and hotel occupancy that Las Vegas ever saw a few years ago. And, the reason that they approved the medallions that are out there right now was because there were so many construction projects on the way - half of which got scrapped.

Of course, you can rip off customers by taking the long way, or be a pimp to make the money to pay your mortgage and feed your family. I guess that is what the Nevada Taxicab Authority wants Las Vegas cabbies to do.
