HOW TO GET TAXIS TO GO TO THE 

LAS VEGAS CONVENTION CENTER

There is a simple solution to getting taxis to pick up conventioneers at the Las Vegas Convention Center when there is a huge convention getting out at the stupidest time of the day for traffic around the Las Vegas Convention Center. All the Las Vegas Convention Center has to do is hand a $10 bill to each cabbie who picks up at the Las Vegas Convention Center between 4pm and 6pm. Now, I know that will never happen, because it is absolutely ridiculous. But it is not as ridiculous as expecting cab drivers to work for less than minimum wage in order to pick up at the Las Vegas Convention Center between 4pm and 6pm, when traffic is grid locked and there are lots of taxi customers to pick up without sitting empty in grid lock traffic trying to inch back to the Las Vegas Convention Center. If you are not aware, Las Vegas taxi cab drivers are straight commission employees. Not only do they not get paid when they are empty, but many drivers have to pay for the gas they are wasting while stuck in rush hour traffic trying to crawl back to the Las Vegas Convention Center. Somebody should send a memo to the Nevada Taxicab Authority, but they don't care about whether cabbies in Las Vegas make money or work for free.

The biggest gripe of the Nevada Taxicab Authority regarding how many cabs are on the streets 24/7, is that conventioneers have to wait for a long time to get a cab at the Las Vegas Convention Center at 5pm when the traffic is grid locked and all the hotels near the Las Vegas Convention Center need cabs. The Nevada Taxicab Authority wants cabbies to drive empty past the Sahara Hotel and Las Vegas Hilton and Renaissance Hotel and Marriott Suites and Riviera and Circus Circus and all the other places that desperately need cabs at 5pm when their is a big convention, and then the cabbie is supposed to spend 20 minutes fighting traffic into the Las Vegas Convention Center to pick up, and then wait for 10 minutes just to get out of the Las Vegas Convention Center parking lot. Cabbies are straight commission employees, and if they love their wives and kids, and if they are financially responsible adults, they would only be expected to pick up the closest available ride and try to make some money during the few hours when they don't have to wait in long lines of taxis, thanks to the Nevada Taxicab Authority flooding the streets with cabs 24 hours a day. Knowing that there is no money to made later in the evening, because of the horrendous amount of taxis, is even more incentive for Las Vegas cabbies to not pick-up at the Las Vegas Convention Center during rush hour traffic.

All that has to be done is to have the conventions start and finish when traffic is not at its worst. If a huge convention went from 11am to 7pm, getting cabs would be no problem, because the town is not grid locked with rush hour traffic. It would also be beneficial to conventioneers if the persons in Las Vegas who have the power to okay construction lane closures would work with the Las Vegas Convention Center and prohibit street closures and lane closures in places that affect convention traffic on days when the biggest conventions are in town. You would think the Mayor and City Council in Las Vegas would care about keeping big conventions in Las Vegas.
